Nowadays, music can be played from various online sources, which render media players obsolete, despite their advanced sorting capabilities. Tomahawk can bridge the gap between local and online music. The software's purpose is to play your music, regardless of where you have it. Even if your audio files are buried in a deep folders structure, stored somewhere online or streamed from another computer, Tomahawk will find them.

In terms of appearance, Tomahawk is similar to other advanced media players. You can select various folders, in a column, on the left side of the interface and view audio files and other contents in the larger area on the right. Local audio files are imported and sorted automatically, without any user input. In other words, you can just launch the application and find all your music organized by artist, album and so on, without needing to select any folders in a menu.

Besides local music folders, Tomahawk can also import various online sources. You may connect to Spotify, SoundCloud, LastFM, Subsonic and to many other accounts. Once you connect to one or more accounts, the application will automatically import your playlists from those accounts and it will display them on the same user interface. Imported files will be included in the same collection, on the left side of the main interface. When you play a track, the application will look for the best available source, without asking you for any input. Additional collections can be imported from remote computers and from other users, if they decide to share their music.

As previously mentioned, audio tracks are sorted automatically, but you can also create your own playlists and smart playlists. When creating a smart playlist, you can set up a wide range of conditions, to populate them only with tracks from a specific artist, album or genre, tracks with a specific loudness or tracks that meet many other criteria. It is also possible to look up charts with top artists, new releases or information about songs or artists from your own collections. The information includes an artist's top hits, which you can select and play, if the tracks can be found in your libraries.

Pros

You can organize and play your audio tracks, regardless of their origin. The software can import and sort music automatically from local folders, remote computers and various online sources. Also, Tomahawk will look for the best available source when you play a track.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention. Tomahawk's smart functionality gives you the possibility of gathering all your favorite songs onto a single interface, regardless of where you have stored them.
